Scheduled Maintenance & Client Release – October 1st

There.com will be temporarily closed for scheduled maintenance on Thursday, October 1st while our team rolls out a new server and client release.

Maintenance Window:
12:00 PM – 2:00 PM Pacific Time
3:00 PM – 5:00 PM Eastern Time

During this maintenance window, the virtual world will be unavailable while our team updates the servers and releases the new There client.

This release includes several exciting improvements to Quests, the removal of our old XSL-based web pages, inventory performance improvements, Organizer updates, and several bug fixes.

Quest Improvements Are Here!

A big focus of this release is expanded support for Quest authors.

We want to give a huge THANK YOU to the members who volunteered their time to help us test these new Quest features in our special QA client! Your testing and feedback helped our team prepare these features for release to the entire Thereian community.

Teleport to Clue

Quest authors will now see a “Teleport to” option for clues that have been dropped in-world, making it much easier to travel directly to a clue’s location.

Retrieve All & Put Back All

Quest authors can now retrieve all of their clues back into inventory at once and later “Put Back All” to return those clues to their previous locations.

Rename Quests

Quest authors can now give their Quests names in their inventory, making it much easier to organize and identify different Quests.

Improved Quest Progress Page

The Quest author’s Progress Page now includes a list of clues along with convenient links that allow authors to travel to the clue location, view the clue, and edit it.

Improved Quest Security

Links to Quests will no longer include IDs that could potentially be manipulated to expose clues without properly solving or traveling to them. This change helps protect the integrity of member-created Quests and keeps the challenge fair for everyone.

Goodbye, XSL!

When There was originally created in the early 2000s, XSL (Extensible Stylesheet Language) was one of the latest technologies available for building web pages, and There’s web pages were built using it.

Technology has changed quite a bit since then!

Modern browsers have begun warning that support for XSL is being deprecated and will eventually be removed. This release moves There away from those old XSL pages so those browser warnings will go away.

You shouldn’t notice much of a visual difference, although anecdotally, some people have reported that the updated pages seem a little faster!

Inventory Performance Improvements

We’ve made additional behind-the-scenes improvements to inventory performance, particularly for members with large inventories.

Bug Fixes

Free Paintball Shot Sounds

During Free Paintball periods, an empty paint gun could sometimes make the normal empty gun sound even though it was actually firing free paintballs.

This release fixes that issue so a proper firing sound will play during Free Paintball Thursdays.

Organizer – Purchased & Try It Items

The Organizer could sometimes fail to display recently purchased add-on items or continue displaying Try It items after the trial had expired.

This issue has been fixed.

Help Us Squash Any Bugs!

Our team has been testing this release with the help of members using a special QA client, but testing can never recreate every situation that might happen once a new release reaches the entire Thereian community.

That means there may still be a few bugs or unexpected technical issues hiding out there.

If you encounter something that doesn’t seem right after the release, please be patient with us and report it to Staff as soon as possible at Feedback@thereinc.com. The sooner we receive detailed information about an issue, the sooner our team can investigate it.

When submitting a bug report, please include:

  • Your There username.
  • A detailed explanation of what happened.
  • The exact steps you took before the problem occurred so Staff can try to recreate the same scenario.
  • Screenshots of the issue whenever possible.
  • Your There.log file, if applicable.

How to Find Your There.log File

Your There.log can contain valuable technical information that helps our team determine what happened when you experienced a problem.

To attach your There.log to your email:

  1. Click the attachment button in your email.
  2. Click the folder icon on your taskbar to open File Explorer.
  3. In the left sidebar, click This PC.
  4. Find and open Windows-SSD (C:) to access your C: Drive.
  5. Open the Makena folder.
  6. Open the There folder.
  7. Open the ThereClient folder.
  8. You’ll see quite a few files in this folder. Scroll down until you find There.log. The files should be listed alphabetically.
  9. Select or double-click There.log to attach the text file to your email.

You can also navigate directly to:

C:\Makena\There\ThereClient\There.log

Providing your There.log along with detailed steps and screenshots can make a big difference in helping our team recreate an issue and track down a fix.

Thank you to everyone who helped test this release, and thank you to the entire Thereian community for your patience while the virtual world is temporarily offline.

We’ll see you back in There after maintenance!
